Perseverant to a FaultJust like in intimate relationships, sometimes we stay in unhappy friendships for far too long despite how problematic or dissatisfying they’ve become. 1. Shared HistoryWhen we've invested so much time with a friend it can feel especially difficult to end things given the memories that we've created together. 2. IndebtedWe can feel obligated to continue a friendship — despite how unfulfilling it's become — if they helped us through a difficult part of our lives. 3. Friend GroupIf they are part of a group of friends we have and want to maintain, it can get complicated or be uncomfortable to create distance with one of them. 4. Conflict AvoidanceIt may feel easier to sustain a faux friendship than to ask for it to be different, end it or exit silently. 5. Not Knowing HowThere's a lot of resources on how to break up with a romantic partner but no instruction manual on how to do so in a healthy way with friends. Remember, friendships also take effort to update and maintain them but when you've already done your due diligence or it's become toxic, it's not just okay but necessary to end them for all involved.
